SHORIN RYU

Shorin Ryu is oldest Karate Style in the world The word Shorin Ryu means Shaolin tradiion or Young forest. Shorin Ryu training emphasize on quick blocks. Immediate and power full attack. Short stances, circular evading steps and normal breathings.

Shorin Ryu system is founded by matsumura Soken, generaily called Bushi matsumura He was trained under Sakugawa the earliest known Okinawa Te (old name of karate) Master. Matsumura served as the chief martial art instructor of royal femily, kings body guard and court retrainer. He has visited China many times as an envoy of Okinawan king and stayed there for long time learning Chinese fist. After returning from china he refined Shuri Te techniques with thevast knowledge he has gained through his studies and experiences. It is believed that Mastumura modified the katas Nihanchi, Seisan, Passai, Kusanku and Goju Shi ho. He has created som of the noteworthy students like Anko itosu,Chotoku kyan, Choki Motobu and Chosin Chibana.

Anko itsu was an incredible instuctor who is considered as the father of modern Okinawan karate. He has possessed immense power to crush bamboo stalk with bare hands. He has the ability to receive heavy blows in to his body without any bad effect. While fighting he preferred to get blows rather than blocking them, because he believed that the oppenent’s attacks are not strong enoughto hurt him. If he rooted in horse stance (NIhanchi stance) it was imposible to push him away. He is credited for simplifying the long Pinan kata into five segments. He has also modified the katas Kusanku and Chennan. It was itosu who put an end to the secret practice of karate by demonstating it in public. He popularized the training of karate among school students.

Itosu’s top student was Chotoku Kyan, the founder or Sobayashi Shorin Ryu. He was a Master with abundant knowiedge, at that time in Okinawa. His jumping kicks were amazing. In fighting he skillfully used taisabaki movements to defeat his opponent. He has blunted Shuri te and Tomari te techniques in his teachings. Kyan was a participant in 1936 meeting of Okinawan Masters in which the term karate was standardized instead of To de. He has formulated the kata Anaku which is considered as his most worth full contribution to his style. His prominent students include Eizo Shimabuku, Shoshin Nagamine, and Zenryo Shimabuku the pioneers of Modern Shorin Ryu styles. During these masters period Karate has undergone rapid changes. The adaptation of Katas from different schools and intermingling of teaching ways virtually ended the identity of particular style.

Takamiyagi trained Shorin Ryu system from Eizo Shimabuku and Toma Seiki (student of Shoshin Nagamine) formed our style. Ravindran who practiced under Takamiyagi and Kuppuswamy nown carries the long heritage of Shorin Ryu system. Takamiyagi has appointed Ravindran as the chief instructor of Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate Do Udun Ti Kobujutsu Association and now he leads our classes all over world.

OUR EMBLEM

Signs and symbols cultivate their meaning according to culture, context and mass societal option. Our style has an attractive and meaningful emblem made by our masters. Red, Yellow, Black and White are the color used for our emblem and let us see what they stand for. The red is the color of fire and blood associated with energy, courage, power, passion, desire, determination vigor and vitality.

Yellow color represents mind and intellect.it relates to hope, happiness, cheerfulness, fun, uplifting and optimism. Yellow color resonates with left or logic side of the brain. White reflects innocence, purity and perfection.it represents beginning and simplicity. White can balance all color

The black color relates to hidden and secretive things. It implies strong will, self-control, discipline and independence.

The emblem is designed with in a circle and it is a profound, transcendent symbol. A group of Persons with same interest come under one circle. Circle signifies infinity and eternity. It is said to represent protection.

Inside the circle there are Japanese script, our style name read as Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate Do on the top help and Udun Ti Kobujutsu Association on the bottom half. Karate , Kobudo and Udun Ti are the martial art forms that we teach and those letters give light to our training systems.

Left rotating wheel (Hidari Gomon) at the center is the symbol of Okinawan Kingdom. Wheel is the symbol of progress. Carts and instruments were made with it and became the basics of economic revival. Buddhism and Celtic religions adopted wheel as their symbol and they might have influenced Okinawan seal.

Right to left rotation has its own significance. From the minute atom to the vast galaxy, we can see its influence. The electrons of an atom revolve anti clock wise. The planets of the solar system including earth revolve to left. The blood inside human body flows anti clock wise. So rotation to left is considered as the basis of all activities.

The three equal segments within the wheel represent three forces of universe the positives, negative and neutral or three periods the past, present and future. We can see three stages or states of things or objects around us and our emblem proclaims that we are part of this universe.
